Proactive care to keep your best friend happy, healthy, and by your side for years to come.
At Barkfield Animal Hospital, we believe that proactive care is the most precious gift you can give your pet. Because our furry companions age much faster than we do, their health can change significantly in just a few months. An annual or bi-annual wellness exam is the most effective way to detect underlying health issues—such as kidney disease, heart murmurs, or early-stage cancer—before they become serious, painful, or more difficult to treat.
During a wellness visit, our experienced veterinary team performs a comprehensive "nose-to-tail" assessment. This isn’t just a quick look-over; we carefully examine your pet’s eyes, ears, dental health, skin, and joints, while also listening closely to their heart and lungs.
These visits allow us to establish a "health baseline" unique to your pet. By documenting what is normal for them when they are healthy, we can more easily spot subtle changes in weight, behavior, or physical condition during future visits. Our goal is to partner with you to ensure your pet doesn't just live longer, but enjoys a higher quality of life in every stage—from the playful puppy and kitten years to their golden senior years.

We check eyes, ears, skin, and coat, and listen to heart and lungs for any irregularities .
Maintaining a healthy weight is key to longevity. We provide tailored nutritional advice for your pet's life stage.
We screen for dental disease, joint pain, or new lumps that may require further diagnostic testing.

Checking heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature.
Examining the coat, skin, eyes, ears, and mouth
Palpating the abdomen and listening to the heart and lungs.
Monitoring body condition scores and discussing diet.

We generally recommend an annual exam for adult pets. Senior pets or those with chronic conditions may benefit from visits every six months.
Please bring any previous medical records (if you are a new client) and a list of your pet's current food and medications.
If we detect any abnormalities, we will walk you through the findings immediately. We may recommend further diagnostics—like our in-house lab work or ultrasound—to create an accurate treatment plan tailored to your pet's needs.
