A safe, painless, and non-invasive way to see inside your pet’s body in real-time for accurate diagnosis and peace of mind.
At Barkfield Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer advanced ultrasound technology as a key component of our diagnostic toolkit. While X-rays are excellent for looking at bones and the general size of organs, ultrasound allows us to look inside the organs themselves. This "real-time" imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create a detailed picture of your pet's internal anatomy, allowing our veterinarians to see the texture, blood flow, and movement of the heart, liver, kidneys, and more.
Because ultrasound is completely non-invasive and does not use radiation, it is an incredibly safe option for pets of all ages—from checking on a pregnancy to monitoring a senior pet’s chronic condition. It is often the gold standard for investigating symptoms like chronic vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or abnormal blood work. By getting a clear, high-definition view of what is happening beneath the surface, we can diagnose issues like bladder stones, organ tumors, or heart valve problems with incredible precision. This allows us to move straight to the most effective treatment plan, saving valuable time and ensuring your pet gets back to their happy, healthy self as quickly as possible.Digital X-rays are an essential tool for evaluating a wide range of conditions, from identifying broken bones and joint issues like arthritis to detecting foreign objects your pet may have swallowed. We also use radiology to assess the size and shape of internal organs like the heart, lungs, and liver, which is vital for diagnosing respiratory issues or heart disease. Furthermore, digital files can be shared instantly with board-certified radiologists via the cloud, ensuring that if your pet needs a specialist's second opinion, we can get answers in hours rather than days. This technology reflects our commitment to providing the families of Cumming with fast, accurate, and non-invasive medical solutions.Because our pets are masters at hiding pain, they often suffer in silence with broken teeth or infected gums. Our professional dental services are designed to identify hidden sources of discomfort and stop the progression of periodontal disease. By investing in regular dental cleanings and professional assessments, you aren't just improving your pet's quality of life; you are likely extending their lifespan. We utilize modern veterinary dental technology to ensure that every cleaning is thorough, safe, and effective, giving your pet a pain-free mouth and a reason to keep wagging their tail.

We use ultrasound to carefully examine the architecture of the stomach, intestines, liver, and spleen to find the cause of digestive issues or pain.
By looking at the heart's chambers and valves in motion, we can accurately diagnose heart disease and monitor cardiac health.
Ultrasound guides us during "fine-needle aspirates," allowing us to safely collect small samples from internal lumps or organs without the need for major surgery.

We may gently shave a small patch of fur in the area being scanned. This ensures the ultrasound probe makes direct contact with the skin for the clearest possible image.
The room is usually dimmed to help your pet relax. Your pet will rest comfortably on a soft padded table or a "v-trough" for support.
A cool, water-based gel is applied to the skin, and the veterinarian moves a small handheld probe over the area. There is no pain or "pinching" involved.
We watch the live images on the screen, capturing measurements and videos of organ function as they happen.
Please reach us at barkfieldah@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
For abdominal ultrasounds, we usually recommend fasting for 8–12 hours. A full stomach can block the view of other organs like the liver or kidneys. However, always keep water available unless told otherwise.
Most pets tolerate ultrasound very well while awake because it is painless. If a pet is extremely anxious or if we need to take a biopsy, a mild sedative may be used to keep them still and comfortable.
A typical ultrasound takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on whether we are looking at a single organ or performing a full abdominal scan.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
